SEPTEMBER 11, 9am-5pm and SEPTEMBER 12, 12-5pm, Lots of Gems Book Sale
Becker Library is making room for new books! They are holding a used book sale on September 11-12, 2010, at the library. Thousands of books will be available for purchase. Hardbacks: $2; paperbacks: $1 . Becker Library, 1521 N. Sixth Street, Springfield, on the campus of Benedictine University at Springfield . SEPTEMBER 15, 6-8pm, Poetry Open Mic
Bring poetry to read – or just sit back and listen while enjoying refreshing beverages in the historic ambiance of Norb Andy’s Tabarin. Brown-bag dinners are welcome. Host is Thea Chesley. Sponsored by Springfield Poets and Writers. Norb Andy's, 518 E. Capitol Ave.
NOTE: While construction takes place on Capitol Ave, parking for Norb Andy's is available on Fifth and Sixth Streets even at the booted meters. The walk at the most is one or 1 1/2 blocks.

SEPTEMBER 23, 9:30-11am, Captain James Lovell Book Signing
The public is invited to a book signing by one of America's heroic astronauts, Captain James Lovell, regarded as a leader of near mythic proportion, maintaining calm and discipline aboard Apollo 13 while the mission experienced monumental equipment failures that threatened to leave the crew stranded in outer space. Commander Lovell and his crew successfully modified their lunar module into an effective lifeboat, assuring their survival in space and their safe return to Earth. OCTOBER 7, 6pm, Poets and Painters
Literary artists and fine art artists merge their talents for a unique and inspiring evening. Join the artists of Prairie Art Alliance and the poets of Springfield Poets and Writers in an evening that includes a poetry reading of poems inspired by the artwork of PAA members, artist introductions,   hors d'oeuvres and wine. Poets reading include: Joanna Beth Tweedy, Anita Stienstra, Jean Staff, Mark Russillo, David Pitchford, Hugh Moore, Lola Lucas, Ethan Lewis, Siobhan Johnson, Liz Huck, Corrine Frisch, KAT Corrigan, Job Conger, Thea Chesley, Lindsey Buis. OCTOBER 14, 10am-12pm, Doris Kearns Goodwin Book Signing

OCTOBER 22, 8pm, David Sedaris
NPR Humorist and Bestselling Author of Naked, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and When You Are Engulfed in Flames. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Barnes & Noble storytime for October will feature costumed members of the Springfield Poets and Writers and the Witches Who-Ha reading classic works by Edgar Allen Poe and others. The event will be in the children's area at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 3111 S. OCTOBER 23, 2-4pm, Halloween Poetry Masque & Stories from the Darkside
Join Springfield Poets and Writers in the Party Tree's costume area for a free open mic reading of poems to make you shiver and stories that will go bump in the night. SPW will gather in Halloween garb to enchant, amuse, and yes, scare you. Get inspired to create your own look for the season's parties. Book discussion and signing with author Nora Titone.
